Comments

This discussion between Yumi and Yuika is another example of an unbalanced discussion; this is rather unusual between the same gender. Yumi has 238 words compared to Yuika’s 88; however, the conversation is animated and both participants are engaged. Thus the acoustic dysfluency is rather low, with few mispronunciations and a low amount of silence. As for lexical dysfluency, problems are few, and this is also the case with syntactic dysfluency, though the MLRs for Yuika are very low, 4.2 syllables. In short, this interaction shows that while conversations can be engaging and animated there can still be issues in who is doing the most talking, and as one talks more than the other, there will be more issues with dysfluency. So all too often the quiet person appears to be more fluent than he or she actually is.
