Comments

Kaho and Takumi have a rather awkward conversation with a very high rate of silence 18.7%. At times it seems that Kaho is extremely uncomfortable in talking with Takumi, and both participants have high rates of silence 62.4 for Takumi and 54.2 for Kaho. While the topic of exercise and sports is one that Takumi seems to delight in, it doesn’t seem apparent that Kaho has any knowledge or interest in the topic until later on when she does show some knowledge, in talking about her previous ballet experience and knowledge of baseball. As for acoustic dysfluency, there is high rate of cross-talk pausing 19.2 seconds, with several micropauses with Takumi. Takumi has a 12.2 second mean length pause rate as compared to Kaho, indicating that he is apparently at his wits end in trying to get responses from Kaho. Lexical dysfluency is only high with the use of L2, with Takumi having 23 occurrences. As for syntactic dysfluency, Takumi has a 15.3 MLRs, double that of Kaho who has 6.6. This dominance is also evident  in the number of words that Takumi has 315 (459 syllables) as compared to Kaho’s 179 (241 syllables), though their speaking time is relatively similar 303 to 284. Thus, when looking at Kaho’s articulation rate of 0.8 to Takumi’s 1.5, we can see who is definitely talking faster. Though at the end of the discourse, Kaho seems a bit more at ease, it goes to show that there can definitely be “issues” in gendered discourse.
